To help the disabled people, a charity auction of tea leaves would be held at the Gauhati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) next month with star buyers and prominent personalities joining the event, state’s Industries Minister and GTAC chairman Pradyut Bordoloi said today.
«The grand charity tea auction will be held on the occasion of World Disability Day on December 3 in keeping with GTAC’s commitment to social causes,» Bordoloi told reporters here.
Stating the proceeds of the auction would be used for helping the disabled, he said the tea growers were requested to send some of their best produce for the event and their response so far was positive.
«We have also requested the leading buyers, merchants and exporters of tea to participate in the auction and we are hopeful of a positive response,» he said.
Prominent personalities from various fields in the state and outside have been sent invitations to join the special auction, the minister added.
Set up in 1970 the GTAC, with its primary commodity Assam tea under the hammer, has emerged as the second largest CTC tea auction market in the world and second largest overall next only to the Colombo auction centre in Sri Lanka.
